The True Heirs of Abraham

Nearness to Ibrahim and ultimately to Allah is not inherited through blood or claimed through tribal affiliation, but through adherence to his way: pure monotheism, submission, sacrifice, and righteous action.

“The Patriarch, the Lord’s close friend,

each man lay claim, each tribe contend.

For not by kith, nor blood so near,

But by his way those near adhere.”

The term Patriarch, often used in both Jewish and Christian discourse, refers to the founding fathers of the faith, most notably Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. In Islamic tradition, Ibrahim (AS) holds an even more elevated status as the Father of Monotheism, the Father of the Prophets and the archetype of pure submission to God.

The Qur’an describes Ibrahim with the unique title of Khalilullah, meaning, the close, intimate friend of Allah:

“And who is better in religion than one who submits himself to Allah while being a doer of good and follows the religion of Abraham, inclining toward truth? And Allah took Abraham as an intimate friend.” (Quran 4:125)

The poem highlights that every monotheistic tradition lays claim to Ibrahim. Jews, Christians, and Muslims all trace their spiritual lineage back to him. Yet the Qur’an decisively rejects any attempt to confine him within the sectarian or denominational boundaries of Judaism or Christianity:

“Abraham was neither a Jew nor a Christian, but he was one inclining toward truth, a Muslim [submitting to Allah]. And he was not of the polytheists.” (Quran 3:67)

The poem drives this point further by rejecting any notion of salvation or closeness through lineage, as claimed by Jews, or through ‘faith alone’, as claimed by Christians.

Even direct descent from Ibrahim offers no automatic privilege. As the Qur’an states:

“Those who are worthiest of Abraham are those who followed him, and this Prophet [Muhammad], and those who believe. And Allah is the ally of the believers.” (Qur’an 3:68)

This principle is reinforced in the Sunnah. The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Whoever is slowed down by his deeds will not be sped up by his lineage.”

He also addressed his own daughter, Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her):

“O Fatimah, save yourself from the Fire, for I cannot avail you against Allah at all.”

These statements completely sever the illusion that blood ties, or indeed faith, alone can substitute for Iman and righteous action.

Deeper readings within Judaism and Christianity also reject salvation by birth or lineage. In the Gospels, John the Baptist rebukes those who rely on being “children of Abraham,” declaring that God can raise children for Abraham from stones (Matthew 3:9) among many other references.

In this light, the struggle over Jerusalem is a contest over who truly inherits the legacy of the Patriarch, Ibrahim AS.

“And those most close are those who tread,

His perfect path, ‘Ḥanīf’ it’s read.”

The “perfect path” is the millah of Ibrāhīm, the creed, way, and spiritual orientation of Ibrāhīm AS. The Qur’an repeatedly identifies Ibrāhīm not as a Jew or Christian, but as ḥanīf and muslim:

“Abraham was neither a Jew nor a Christian, but he was upright, submitting, and he was not of the polytheists.” (Qur’an 3:67)

The word ḥanīf is especially rich. Lexically, it is connected to inclining, leaning, or turning away. Lisān al-ʿArab records that ḥanifa ʿan al-shayʾ means “to incline away from something,” while defining the ḥanīf as the Muslim who turns away from false religions toward the truth.

It also records explanations such as the one who is sincere, the one who submits to Allah’s command without deviation, and the one upon the religion of Ibrāhīm. 

So there is no contradiction between the literal sense of “inclining” and the Qur’anic sense of “upright.” Ibrāhīm is “upright” precisely because he inclines away from shirk. He is straight because he has turned away from every crooked object of worship.  

This is why the Qur’an describes the Prophet ﷺ himself as being commanded to follow that path:

“Say: Indeed, my Lord has guided me to a straight path, an upright religion, the way of Abraham, ḥanīf; and he was not of the polytheists.” (Qur’an 6:161)

And Allah tells

“You have had an excellent example in Abraham and those with him…” (Qur’an 60:4)
